Chapter Five

After knocking on Sophia’s door for the third time, Logan let it sink in that she wasn’t home, cursing himself for not getting her cell phone number. While Nashville wasn’t considered a dangerous town, Sophia’s comments about that jerk being on parole had Logan a bit nervous. Maybe she had been threatened only in her dreams, but she was a psychic after all, so her nightmares could be a very real warning.

Bracing one hand against the brick wall, he inhaled sharply, mentally acknowledging the fact that he took her psychic powers more seriously than he had let on. He secretly believed in the possibility of connecting with the other side, which made his reasons for Savannah not having a reading with Sophia even more valid. Some things were just better left alone, including the dead. With a sigh, he pushed away from the wall, wondering what to do. Nashville wasn’t all that big of a city, but unless he was extremely lucky, finding Sophia on the crowded streets would be next to impossible.

“Well, damn.” Feeling a bit grumpy, Logan decided to hole himself up in his office and do some paperwork, hoping to fill his head with numbers instead of images of Sophia.

Thirty minutes later he shut his computer down in sheer frustration. “This is useless,” he muttered, and pushed away from his desk. Deciding that a cold beer might mellow his mood, he headed into the bar and motioned for Jack Shea, his head bartender, to toss him a longneck. Although it was early, the bar was already hopping, thanks to Jesse Boone, who was belting out a damned good rendition of Keith Urban’s “Who Wouldn’t Wanna Be Me.”

After this set, next up was Cody McNeal, a kid that Logan was especially fond of and who was quiet and unassuming but chock-full of talent. Logan had been around long enough to realize that the kid had potential. Since Savannah had called in with the excuse of too much schoolwork Logan had given Cody McNeal her spot so that he could showcase his songs. Just last week Toby Keith had stopped into the bar looking for fresh talent for his new record label and Logan would like nothing better than to see Cody make it.

After taking a long pull of his beer Logan scanned the bar, looking to see if Cody had arrived, and almost choked when he spotted Sophia and Cody with their heads bent together in what appeared to be an intimate conversation. Cody said something in Sophia’s ear and she angled her head back and laughed.

“Just who are you fixin’ to kill?” Jack asked, nudging Logan with his elbow.

“What?” Logan pulled his gaze away from Sophia and Cody.

Jack chuckled. “If looks could kill, somebody’s ass would surely be dead as a doornail.”

“I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.”

“Bull. Who is she?” Jack nodded in the direction of Sophia and Cody. He uncapped another beer and handed it to Logan, who was surprised that he had already drained his first one.
